ROUTINES AND SCHEDULES

Although children may not directly express their feelings around the changes they have been experiencing during the Covid-19 pandemic, they certainly feel the stress and effects. Just like adults, their regular routines have been greatly impacted and children are also dealing with this shift in their life. Children often look to the adults in their life to model behaviors. They also look to their parents and caregivers for comfort and support. That is why now more than ever, it is crucial to establish and maintain routines and schedules to the best of your ability to help children navigate this time to establish comfort, safety, and security.

Although you do not have to follow a strict schedule every single day, it is helpful to have some routines in place. Children thrive off of routines. It can be as simple as simple as having the same morning routine everyday (e.g. brush your teeth, get dressed, have breakfast, play time). Creating a sense of structure throughout the day keeps children in a normal routine, such as waking up at the same time, having meals at the same time, and going to sleep at the same time, each day. It is not only helpful for a child to know what to expect but it is also helpful as their parent or caretaker to know you have a plan in place for the day.

Developing daily schedules and routines that are consistent, helps create a sense of control during a time where things may feel very much out of control. Having set schedules and routines can help reduce the burden of stress and concern over how to fill your time at home.
